Congested Skin
Clogged pores are one of the most common skin concerns and can appear in many different forms, including milia, whiteheads, blackheads, and enlarged pores. While often harmless, they can make the skin look uneven, textured, or congested, and may lead to breakouts if not properly managed.
Pores become clogged when excess oil, dead skin cells, or debris build up on the surface of the skin. This blockage can harden inside the pore, trapping sebum and sometimes bacteria, which causes spots or bumps. Factors such as hormones, skincare products, makeup, sun exposure, and even genetics can all play a role in pore congestion.
Although clogged pores are not usually a medical concern, many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons, to prevent acne, and to keep their skin looking smoother and clearer.
Common types of congestion

Milia
Milia are small, white, hard bumps that develop when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin’s surface.
Whiteheads
Whiteheads are closed comedones that appear as small, white or flesh-coloured bumps when pores are blocked but remain sealed.
Blackheads
Blackheads are open comedones where trapped oil and debris are exposed to air, causing them to oxidise and turn dark on the surface.
Enlarged pores
Enlarged pores are usually the result of excess oil production, a buildup of dead skin cells, or a loss of elasticity with age, which makes pores more visible.
Treatment Options:
Congested skin can present as milia, whiteheads, blackheads or enlarged pores. Treatment focuses on removing accumulated dead skin cells, clearing blocked pores, regulating excess oil and improving skin texture. The most suitable option will depend on the type and severity of congestion:
-
Microdermabrasion: A deep exfoliating treatment that removes dead skin cells and surface debris, helping to clear blocked pores and create a smoother, brighter complexion. Best for: blackheads, whiteheads, enlarged pores and general surface congestion.
-
Advanced COMCIT Facial: Combines microdermabrasion with advanced serums and skin-rejuvenating technology for a more comprehensive treatment. Best for: congested skin accompanied by dehydration, dullness, enlarged pores or uneven texture.
-
Chemical Peels, including PRX Peels: Professional exfoliating solutions that dissolve excess oil, dead skin cells and debris within the pores. Peels can be tailored to the skin, beginning with a gentle entry-level treatment before progressing to stronger options where appropriate. Best for: whiteheads, blackheads, oily skin, recurring congestion and visible pores.
-
Carbon Laser Peel: Activated carbon is applied to the skin before being targeted with laser energy, removing oil, impurities and dead skin cells from the pores while gently resurfacing the complexion. Best for: oily or congested skin, blackheads and enlarged pores.
-
Professional Milia Extraction: A precise extraction treatment used to release superficial milia safely without unnecessary damage to the surrounding skin. It may be added to a facial or microdermabrasion treatment where appropriate. Best for: small, superficial milia.
-
Electrolysis for Enlarged Milia: A fine probe delivers a controlled amount of heat directly into stubborn milia, breaking down the trapped keratin so it can be safely released. Best for: larger, deeper or persistent milia that cannot be removed through exfoliation alone.
