Thread Veins & Rosacea

full-face-thread-veins.png

< Thread veins (also known as spider veins or telangiectasia) are small, visible blood vessels that can appear red, blue, or purple just beneath the skin’s surface. They are common on the face and legs and can develop due to ageing, sun damage, hormonal changes, or skin conditions such as rosacea. While thread veins are medically harmless, many people choose to have them treated for cosmetic reasons as they can affect confidence.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes breakouts. Over time, repeated inflammation can make thread veins more prominent, meaning the two conditions are often linked. While rosacea cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed with the right combination of professional treatments and lifestyle advice, helping to reduce redness, minimise flare-ups, and calm sensitive skin >

The NHS does not usually offer treatment for thread veins or rosacea when considered cosmetic. At Clear Skin Clinic, we provide safe and effective treatment options for clients who wish to have them managed privately.

Thread Vein Management Treatments Options:

Unlike general facial redness, established thread veins require a treatment that targets the individual blood vessels. Soothing facials and LED therapy may support the surrounding skin but will not remove visible veins.

  • Targeted SWT/IPL Thread Vein Treatment: Controlled pulses of light are absorbed by the visible blood vessel, heating it until it safely collapses. The body then naturally clears the treated vessel, leaving the area clearer and more even in tone. Treatment is focused only on the individual veins rather than the full face. Best for: small or moderate facial thread veins around the nose, cheeks and chin.

  • Pulsed Dye Laser: Delivers a concentrated wavelength of light that specifically targets visible blood vessels. It can treat more persistent vessels while minimising damage to the surrounding skin. Best for: prominent, resistant or more extensive facial thread veins, including vessels associated with ongoing redness.

A consultation and patch test are required before vascular treatment. The number of sessions needed will depend on the size, depth and number of vessels. New thread veins may develop over time, particularly when they are associated with sun damage or rosacea.

Rosacea Management Treatment Options:

The following options are listed according to how directly they address the visible signs of rosacea, beginning with the most corrective treatments and progressing to gentler supportive options.

  • Pulsed Dye Laser Rosacea Management: Uses concentrated vascular laser energy to target persistent redness and superficial broken vessels precisely. Best for: pronounced or persistent redness, established thread veins and rosacea that has not responded sufficiently to gentler treatments.

  • Ellipse IPL Rosacea Management: Controlled pulses of light target the enlarged blood vessels responsible for diffuse redness, flushing and visible capillaries. As the vessels are naturally cleared by the body, the complexion can appear calmer and more even. Best for: widespread facial redness, frequent flushing and rosacea accompanied by visible thread veins.

  • SkinPen Medical Microneedling: When rosacea is calm and stable, a carefully controlled SkinPen treatment may support skin renewal, strengthen the skin barrier and improve overall texture. Treatment depth and intensity are tailored to minimise unnecessary irritation. SkinPen does not directly remove established thread veins and would not normally be performed during an active flare-up. Best for: mild, stable rosacea accompanied by enlarged pores, uneven texture, weakened skin or acne scarring.

  • Collagen-Stimulating Skin Boosters: Carefully selected injectable skin boosters work within the skin to improve hydration, elasticity and overall resilience. They may support a healthier skin barrier and improve the quality of dry, fragile or depleted rosacea-prone skin. However, they do not directly remove thread veins or reliably control active flushing. Treatment should be performed only when the rosacea is calm and stable, as injections may temporarily cause redness, swelling or sensitivity. Best for: stable rosacea accompanied by dehydration, poor elasticity, weakened skin or general loss of skin quality.

  • Cryo-Oxygen Therapy Facial: Delivers cold oxygen to the skin to reduce heat, inflammation and swelling while soothing sensitivity and redness. This treatment supports symptom management but does not remove established blood vessels. Best for: flushed, warm, sensitive or easily irritated rosacea-prone skin.

  • Dermalux LED Phototherapy: Uses gentle therapeutic wavelengths of light to calm inflammation, support the skin barrier and encourage recovery without heat or downtime. It is a supportive treatment rather than a direct method of removing visible vessels. Best for: sensitive, reactive or inflamed rosacea and ongoing maintenance between corrective treatments.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF, suitable homecare and identifying individual triggers—such as heat, UV exposure, alcohol, spicy foods or stress—are important parts of long-term rosacea management.

A consultation allows us to assess whether the main concern is isolated thread veins, diffuse rosacea redness, active inflammation, weakened skin or a combination before recommending the safest and most appropriate treatment plan.
